Out and About in Edinburgh
Things to do in the Capital
Few cities in the world combine elegance of architecture, richness of history, cultural vitality and friendliness as well as Edinburgh. The flat at 45 Cumberland Street is ideally placed to allow you to enjoy all of it.
Close by the flat there are Art Galleries with world-renowned collections. and if contemporary art is your special interest, the area between Cumberland Street and Princes Street is home to many independent galleries where you can view or buy.
A free bus circulates around all the major galleries, so that you can visit as you please. The cafe at the National Portrait Gallery in Queen Street has a fabulous selection of home-baking, salads, soups and the very best coffee - highly recommended!
Henderson's Salad Bar is an old-established family vegetarian restaurant just a short walk up Dundas Street.
In the other direction is the East Gate to the Botanic Gardens which blaze out in a glorious display of rhodedendrons in the early summer. The seventy acres are most peaceful and beautiful and have a magnificent group of glass houses, where orchids, giant Amazonian water lilies and a 200-year-old palm tree thrive alongside the biggest collection of wild plants from China outside of China itself.
No visit to Edinburgh would be complete, of course, without a visit to Edinburgh Castle and a stroll down the Royal Mile to the New Scottish Parliament at Holyrood, as well, of course, as the Royal Palace of Holyrood itself.
The "village" community of Stockbridge is just two streets away from the flat and here you will find speciality and "alternative" shops, coffee and delicatessen shops, little restaurants and quiet walks along the banks of the Water of Leith. A trip down to Leith itself will reward you with the opportunity to visit the Royal Yacht "Britannia" which is berthed alongside an ultra modern shopping precint with a cinema complex.
The annual Edinburgh International Festival along with the Edinburgh Tattoo in August and September is a prime time to visit Edinburgh but there is much happening throughout the rest of the year and where better to enjoy an out-of-season short break than this beautiful city.
